Not only will this hot cocoa warm you up, but you'll also benefit from the natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric. It's a great immune system booster.

Feel free to make substitutions to suit your taste, but there are a couple of ingredients I highly recommend keeping intact. The combination of coconut oil and black pepper is crucial for enhancing the absorption of curcumin from turmeric.

While you can omit the cayenne pepper and switch to whole milk instead of plant-based milk, do yourself a favour and include those two key ingredients for maximum benefit.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Tsp nutmeg

  • 3 Tsp coconut oil

  • 1/4 Tsp black pepper

  • 3 1/2 Tbsp date syrup

  • 2 Tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/4 Tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

  • 2 1/2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 Cups oat milk (or any plant-based milk)

Method

  1. Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add milk to the saucepan and heat until bubbles start to form.

  2. Once the milk is bubbling, add cocoa powder to the saucepan. Whisk thoroughly to ensure no lumps are remaining from the cocoa powder.

  3. Lower the heat and add nutmeg, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Whisk well to combine the spices with the cocoa.

  4. Add coconut oil and turmeric to the saucepan. Whisk again to eliminate any lumps and ensure the ingredients are well incorporated.

  5. Finally, add the date syrup to the mixture. Whisk until the date syrup has dissolved into the hot cocoa. Taste the hot chocolate and adjust the sweetness level by adding more date syrup or your preferred sweetener if desired.

  6. Turn off the stove and pour the smooth turmeric hot chocolate into your favourite mug.

  7. Enjoy your turmeric hot chocolate as is or feel free to add a topping of your choice. For example, you can add marshmallow whip and a dash of cinnamon.

Optional Tip: For a smooth texture in your turmeric hot chocolate, make sure to whisk the cocoa powder and turmeric thoroughly to eliminate any lumps before adding the other ingredients.
